Royston Alkins picked up 5 for 16 and struck 62 not out in Diplomats’ win.

The commencement of the 85th season of the Brooklyn Cricket League (BCL), saw former Guyanese national youth cricketer, Royston Alkins, producing a fine all-round performance to lead Diplomats Sports Club past Middlesex Cricket Club by six wickets on Sunday last. The contest, which was played at Marine Park, saw Middlesex winning the toss and electing to take first strike in the 30 overs reduced contest.

Skipper, Mark Audain, a West Indies Legend player, top-scored for Middlesex with a fine innings of 58 while K. Singh (34) chipped in handily. Alkins, who rolled his arm over with his off-spin, removed the dangerous Audain and snared 5-16 in the process as Middlesex were bundled out for 139 all-out in the final over.

The off-spinner, who was on debut, got support from skipper Colin Ross (2-9), Daryl Heerasingh (2-5) and Richard Coates (1-21). Diplomats, in response, coasted home to 143 –4 with Alkins, who ended the chase with a maximum, finished unbeaten on 62 to steer his side home.

Tony Blackman, who shared in a half-century partnership with Alkins, contributed 34, as Richard Woolford (15) and Colin Ross (7 not-out), added to the successful run chase. Bowling for Middlesex S. Davis (2-18) and K. Ramdehol (1-13) were the chief wicket-takers.

The BCL 40 over competitions set to continue this weekend.
