Sheffield Cricket Club chased down a mammoth 272 in 38.2 overs posted by Suburbia Sports Club when the two teams met last Sunday in the 40-0vers Clement “Busta” Lawrence – Premier League 2019 of the Metropolitan Cricket League.

Mansoor Hussain and Zavia Cordwell opened the inning for Suburbia and posted a decent first-wicket partnership. The latter of the two was the first to go, LBW for 37 off the bowling of Jason Dawes. Hussain top-scored with 57. Other main contributors were Arif Islam, 44, Matthew Burey, 46, Andre Lindsey, 18, and tail-ender Mohammad Choudhary, 22.

Darius Gopaul was the most successful Sheffield bowler picking 4 for 57 off 7.3 overs. He was supported by Zahib Tariq 2 for 38, Jason Dawes, Mohammed Abdullah, Clive Doorman, and Shawn Williams all had one wicket apiece in the Sheffield win.

In response, and chasing 273 for victory, Sheffield’s opener Dennis Evans smashed the best century of his career so far, stroking an unbeaten 136 in helping his team beat Suburbia. It was a dominating performance by the opener. When asked if that was his best inning so far, his response was an emphatic “Yes!’.

Evans’ inning was one of pure class, and exactly what you would expect from someone of his caliber, a dedicated and tough cricketer who likes a challenge. He stood tall carrying his bat throughout the inning. One can say he single-handedly orchestrated the win from a batting standpoint, hitting 16 fours and 3 sixes in his brilliant 136 not out, which came off 112 balls.

Denis Evans established two solid partnership, one with Darius Gopaul who was very successful with the ball. Gopaul went on to contribute 51 from 50 deliveries that included six fours and a maximum.

The other partnership was with the number eight batsman Jason Dawes who scored 29 valuable runs down the order as the pair inched closer to the total.

Needing five runs to win, Evans took charge hitting a four over extra cover, then he pushed one to mid-on and took a single which ensured a Sheffield win by three wickets in 36.4 overs, and behind his brilliant batting performance.

Matthew Burey was the most successful bowler for Suburbia picking up 3 for 35, Mohammad Choudhary had 2 for 56, and Rohan Burrell and Zavia Cordwell each took one wicket apiece.
