Deryck Murray To Be Key-Note Speaker At Legends’ Banquet

Former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies wicketkeeper, Deryck Murray, will be the key-note speaker at the prestigious West Indies’ Legends charity banquet which will be held at the South Florida Conference Center in Margate, Florida on Saturday, January 24 at 7:00 PM.

Murray, along with legends such as Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Wes Hall, Clive Lloyd, Andy Roberts, Lance Gibbs, Lawrence Rowe and Alvin Kallicharran will be in South Florida to help promote the Lawrence Rowe Legendary Cricket Foundation’s efforts in assisting underprivileged youths in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami communities.

Murray, who represented the West Indies from 1963 to 1980, played in 62 tests and 26 One Day Internationals. He made his test debut against England at Manchester on June 6th, 1963. His final test was also against England at Leeds on August 7th., 1980  His highest test score was 91, while 61 not out was his highest One-Day score. Murray was responsible for 189 dismissals behind the stumps.

He captained the Trinidad and Tobago team from 1976 to 1981, and was Clive Lloyd’s vice-captain in the 1975 and 1979 World Cup tournaments. Murray received his early education at Queens Royal College in Trinidad, before going on to Cambridge University where he earned his “Cambridge Blue”, and captained the cricket team in 1967. Murray also had stints with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.  Apart from his cricket career, Murray also had a diplomatic stint as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s representatives at the United Nations in New York.

The Central Broward Park Cricket Stadium comes alive on January 25th.

After the banquet, the attention turns to the Central Broward Park Cricket Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, January 25, where the legends will take on a USA Cavaliers X1. In a 30-Over game, starting at 3:00PM. Prior to the start of the game, the legends will assemble on the field with some of the youths from the Lawrence Rowe Legendary Cricket Foundation.

The Legends’ team will be led by Former West Indies Captain, Brian Lara, and will include stars such as  Gordon Greenidge, Larry Gomes, Gus Logie, Courtney Walsh, Collis King, Colin Croft, Nixon Mclean, Wavell Hinds, Mervyn Dillon, Daren Ganga and many more.
