Co-operative Republic of Guyana gained its independence from Great Britain on May 26th, 1966, and the nation has been celebrating its Golden Jubilee Anniversary milestone in and outside of Guyana, since January of this year.

A New York City celebration was launched on January 16 last, in what is currently considered an unprecedented show of Guyana’s distinguished history, rich cultural heritage, and national pride. It is one of the greatest opportunities of national pride Guyanese and others will ever witness. The ongoing celebratory events will be graced by the presence of many dignitaries from Guyana and the USA, including the President of Guyana, His Excellency, Hon. David Granger, and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo. There are a host of events planned in and around the New York City area from June 4 – 12, including a concert, a soccer match for youths, and a parade on June 12, to conclude the celebrations.

The Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration would not be complete without a cricket match, one of Guyana’s greatest pastimes. A Twenty/20 tournament among the three counties of Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at Idlewild Park, 223rd Street and 147th Avenue in Rosedale, Queens, and starting at 9:00 AM. There will be two games, with one of the representative teams drawing a bye to automatically advance to the final, while the two remaining counties will play in what would essentially be a semi-final, before the final between the semi-final winner and the winner of the bye, later in the afternoon on the same Saturday.

The organizing committee is inviting everyone to be part of the celebrations. However, if you would like to get involved and be a part of the cricket fest celebration next Saturday, contact Rudy Persaud at 917 682 6142.
