Liberty Sports Club took an important first step in its effort to have its members become more involved with their local community. On Saturday, March 26 members and supporters of the club participated in a volunteer event with the New York City Parks Department in association with Green Apple Corps.

Liberty Sports manages the Liberty Cricket team which plays in the Eastern American Cricket Association. Players from the team and supporters assisted in a coastal clean up at the Rockaway Community Park, one of the NYC Parks which cricket games are hosted at.

The organization which is headed by Vickey Khilawan has an aim of participating in at least two community events in 2011.

Vice President Danesh Deonarain speaking about the club said, “From the inception of the cricket team in early 2010 we wanted to be more than just a bunch of guys playing cricket. The team has attracted a number of young players and we see it as an opportunity to get them more involved in the community.

“On Saturday we took a very important first step in organizing and volunteering with the NYC Parks Department. We are now looking to build on this start and keep pushing forward.”

If you would like to get involved with the club and join us in our next community event please contact the secretary, Avita Sukhram, by e-mailing [email protected].
