Villagers Are Metropolitan Cricket League Champion

Villagers dethroned defending champions Progressive in a keenly contested final at Floyd Bennett Field Sunday last to cart home the coveted Busta Lawrence Trophy for the first time in their illustrious history.

Progressives won toss and opted to take first strike on a placid batting strip in beautiful sunshine. They amassed a well put together 246 for 7 thanks to a workman like 113 not out from veteran John Sylvester and 52 from M. Gray. E. Gayle (7 overs 42 runs 3 wickets) was the pick of the bowlers for Villagers. He was ably supported by George Adams (6 overs 18 runs 1 wicket); R. Marshall and C. Roye took one wicket each.

In reply Villagers were reduced to eight runs for three wickets in the third over thanks to the exploits of M. Alexis (8 overs 37 runs 3 wicket) before USA nationals Baker and Marshall came together for a crucial 120 runs partnerships in 20 overs. Marshall was eventually removed for an enterprising 71 with the score on 128 for 4 wickets by this time Villagers had regained their composure.

The rest is history Villagers finished with 250 runs for 5 wickets in 38.1 overs.  Orlando Baker a memorable and majestic 95 not out. Useful contributions came from George Adams 33, completing a fine all round performance and skipper C. Roye 28 valuable runs. J. Sylvester and S. George had one wicket each for Progressive.
