Rising Star opener Keddy Lesporis hit an unbeaten 84 against Atlantis. (Photos by Shiek Mohamed)

Rising Star Too Good For Talented Atlantis
Veteran All-Rounder Rashid Afzal, and twenty-one year old Windward Islands national player Keddy Lesporis belittle a talented youthful Atlantis squad.

Atlantis won the toss, and elected to take first strike on a solid Riis Park pitch, but  2008 PSAL “cricketer of the year” Dominic Gomes, and seventeen year old left-arm swing bowler Yogindra “Kishan” Dass were pumped up for the big showdown in the “Florida like” conditions.

Dass swung the new ball with a passion, whilst Gomes made use of the lively Riis Park pitch. Dominic found the edge of Ryan Sukdeo for five, and Rasheem James continued to bowl hostile and aggressive after sending down two consecutive bouncers to former Guyana Under-19 All-Rounder Zaffie Saffiee.  Atlantis was in trouble at 57-3 after 12 overs, but USA national player Clain Williams was determined to play a captain’s knock. Williams would entertain the crowd with some lovely cover drives, and elegant sweep shots, before he was trapped LBW by left-arm orthodox spinner R. Kissoon for a well played 84.

Veteran’s all-rounder’s Rashid Afzal and Mohan Kissoon would then account for five of Atlantis’s batsmen.  Rashid would send attacking batsman Ron Andrews back to the pavilion without adding to the score with an excellent “googly”, while Kissoon deceived former Barbados Under-19 national player Nicholas Stanford with a slower ball.  Stanford blasted a magnificent century against the Metropolitan cricket league the previous day during inter-league competition. The youthful Atlantis squad was restricted to a total of 163 all-out after 29 overs.

Rising Star would open the batting with talented Keddy Lesporis, and  Richard Rampersad.  Lesporis would start the inning with a first ball six off the bowling of NYCR U-19 pacer Casper Davis Jr.  Davis continued to pound the leather down, but Lesporis showed no mercy, and took the attack to the young lad.  Rampersad would not be outdone after he covered drive young pacer Messena  for a stylish six, and a beautiful four, but it was Lesporis who punished the Atlantis bowlers to the different parts of the boundaries.  Lesporis would remain unbeaten on a well played 85, whilst veteran Rashid Afzal completed an all-round performance after picking up three wickets, and scoring 23 runs.

Rising Star CC strives to promote the next generation of cricketers with proper leadership, and strong discipline on and off the cricket field.
