ICC Praises Indianapolis For Hosting Successful Tournament
The International Cricket Council (ICC) today thanked Indianapolis for hosting the ICC Americas World Twenty20 (WT20) Qualifier at the newly developed World Sports Park.
Bermuda, Canada, Suriname and host USA participated in event from 3-10 May with Canada and the USA progressing through to the ICC WT20 Qualifier 2015 to be played in Ireland and Scotland from July 9 to August 26.
The City of Indianapolis committed USD five million to the development of the World Sports Park, which includes two cricket grounds. This was the first international cricket event played at the venue.
ICC’s Head of Global Development, Tim Anderson, said: “We thank Indianapolis for its commitment to cricket in the USA, and congratulate it on the development of a world-class playing surface at the World Sports Parlaying surface at the World Sports Park.
“Indianapolis hosts the Indy 500 (motorsport), Indianapolis Colts (NFL), Indiana Pacers (NBA) and the National Collegiate Athlete Association (NCAA), and is consequently a major sports hub in the US. We are, therefore, honored that cricket has also been embraced by the City.”
Indianapolis, Mayor Greg Ballard, said: “Sports bring people together in a unique way. Indianapolis has been a sports town for nearly 100 years, and we are thrilled that our history, international reputation and new top notch venue have helped our city connect with the global cricket community.”
The ICC Americas WT20 Qualifier generated significant interest around the world on ICC’s social media platforms, with 2.8 million people viewing several posts over the week long event.
