Week-2 Match Round-Up: Troy Baptiste And Ryan Bennett Bags Fifers
Spice Island Cricket Club vs. Lucas Cricket Club
Spice Island won by 134 runs. Troy Baptiste grabs 5 for 16.
Lucas won the toss and elected to take the ball. The Spice Island opening pair of skipper Bevis Nyack, 34, and overseas player Larando Best, 37 (4x4s), followed by Troy Baptiste, 25, paved the way for a Spice Island total 218 for seven off their 40 overs. Other valuable contributions came off the bats of Kenroy Peters, 24, Nigel Williams, 16, and Devon Jones, 12. However, the major blood donor to the Spice Island lifeline was Extras, 57. To be exact, the Lucas bowlers had a wide array of deliveries.
Rodarri Small was the most effective Lucas bowler with figures of 8-0-42-4. Lucas never got going in reply, as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The only batter to reach double-digits was Rodarri Small, 25. The other Lucas batters’ totals ranged from zero to nine, as the ten wickets folded in 28.2 overs with only 84 ticks on the tins.
The pick of the litter of bowlers for Spice Island was Troy Baptiste with 6.2-0-16-5. He picked up his fiver and the Player-of-the-Match award. Devon Jones grabbed 3 for 16 off his seven overs.

Behind Ryan Bennett’s bowling arm, Westbury Cricket Club shut out Sheffield in 25.1 overs and 88 runs on the board. The top scorer for Sheffield was skipper Akeem Dodson, 42, off 50 balls (1×4, 2x6s) caught Joe Brown bowled Ryan Bennett. Abdur Rehman, b. Jason Dawes. Westbury reached the required 89 in just 10.2 overs.
Player-of-the-Match: Ryan Bennett
Villagers Sports Club vs. Pioneer Cricket Club
Villagers won by Pioneer’s absence.
Pioneer was a no-show for the day’s match due to their failure to field a team. Thus, Villagers gained a walk-over and the five points up for grabs.
Atlantis Cricket Club – NY vs. Queens United Sports Club
Atlantis won by six wickets. Randall Wilson’s 63, not out.
With Atlantis hosting Queens United at the shared Idlewild Cricket Park, Queens United won the toss and opted to have a bat. They would go on to post 116, a below-par score for Idlewild.
The Marinaro Dixon-led QUSC’s top order collapsed at 66 for six before Damion Jacobs, and overseas player Kennel Hurd stabilized things, posting 39 and 19 in a seventh-wicket partnership. It was the two highest totals of the QUSC’s inning. The only other contributors to reach double-figures were Extras, 28, and Naveer Ramsarran, 11.
All six of the Atlantis bowlers employed were rewarded with either one or two scalps. Demetrius Adams snatched 2 for nine off 4.3 overs; skipper Gregory Robinson enjoyed figures of 4-0-12-2; overseas player Winston Forrester had 2 for 15 off his six overs, while Prashanth Nair had 2 for 17 off his eight overs.
Player-of-the-Match: Randall Wilson
Staten Island Cricket Club vs. Suburbia Sports Club
The match ended in a dramatic tie, with both teams scoring 172.
Suburbia won the toss and elected to bat. Behind the previous week’s league top scorer Andre Lindsay’s bat, Suburbia was all out for 172 in 31.2 overs. They benefitted from the generosity of 49 Extras, courtesy of the Staten Island bowlers.
Andre Lindsay, 31, again top-scored for his team the second week in a row. His at-bat was supported by contributions from skipper Dean Burrell, 27, Rohan Knight, 17, Sumon Bari, 16, and Towan Henry, 13.
Bowling for Staten Island, Salim Khan had figures of 6.2-0-19-3, along with Shanjay Mohammed’s 2 for 29 off 5 overs.
Taking to the crease, Staten Island Cricket Club celebrating its 150th anniversary was excellent, with contributions from opener Abdul Choudhury, 61 not out, Salim Khan, 12, Shankar Ramakrishnan, 11, and Aneal Rooplal, 12.
A clear winner never emerged as Staten Island posted 172 for nine wickets in 39.5 overs. The last dismissal came from a Mankad dismissal with one run needed for victory and one ball remaining.
The Mankad is fair game for the controversial type of dismissal. With an appeal from the bowler, the dismissal decision by the Umpire is all but inevitable.
