Westbury Cricket Club vs. Villagers Sports Club
Westbury Won by 46 Runs
The most anticipated match of last weekend was the Westbury vs. Villagers at Westbury High School on Long Island.
Winning the toss, Villagers elected to bowl on a pitch favored with much better weather than Brooklyn and a definitive outcome. Westbury took the opportunity; however, their massive three-figure scores against the rest of the league did not materialize. Villagers used their cadre of seven bowlers to restrict Westbury to 193 all out in 30 overs, a below-par team score.
Villagers struck early, sending Roberto Simpson, 7, back to the shade in the third over. The prolific and in-form Westbury skipper Richard Allen, 41 off 24 balls (4x6s, 2x4s), followed with the score at 57 in the eight over. It was probably a sign of things to come, however; the Westbury batting depth emerged with Carlos Green producing a gem of an inning with 57 (4x6s, 2x4s) in the middle and supported by Brandon English, 35, and Javelin Thomas, 16, as Westbury inched toward a team total of 193 all out in the allotted 30 overs.
The Westbury wickets fell at 15, 57, 83, 85, 140, 167, 169, 186, 190, and 193. Bowling for Villagers, recent addition Javon Searles 6-0-42-3 was the pick of the bowlers. His effort was ably supported by Gregory Robinson, 2 for 19 off three overs, and Andre McCarthy, 2 for 27 off his six overs. Skipper George Adams, Ryan Max Burnett, and Michael Frew each snared one wicket in the ten-wicket haul.
Villagers, in response, saw Andre McCarthy’s 40 ball 52 (2x6s, 3x4s) contribution to the team’s 147 all out in 20.3 overs. Other double-digit contributions in the losing cause came from Skipper George Adams, 18, Lorenzo McDonald, 16, Ryan Max Burnett, 11, and Daryl An Hall, 10. Extras, 16. Jaunoy Drysdale was in control of the wrecking ball that demolished the Villagers community center’s first floor, ground floor, and basement, capturing 6 for 29 off his 36 deliveries, including 21 dot balls. Joseph Brown was on the scene with the debris excavator to clean up the remaining 4 for 40 off 5.3 overs.
The Villagers’ wickets fell at 30, 30, 38, 51, 51, 96, 107, 114, 125, and 147.
Suburbia Sports Club vs. Lucas Sports Club
Lucas Won by Eight Wickets
Suburbia won the toss and opted to bat first, with Dean Burrell, 30, and Extras, 14, topping the batting charts for the Cuthbert Mendonca-led Suburbia Sports Club, seeking their fourth win in seven matches. With Suburbia entering the game with less than eleven bodies, they were already at a disadvantage against the Lucas spark plugs.
The tally of 68 in 14.1 overs, with the Suburbia batters failing to individually contribute more than six runs each, except for Burrell’s 30 off 23 balls (1×6, 4x4s), was not impossible for Lucas Sports Club.
Julian George, bowling for Lucas, had remarkable figures of 2.1-2-0-3, Troy Baptiste 5-2-9-2, and Nalburn Whittiker 4-0-26-1 were responsible for the Suburbia scalping.
Lucas took to the middle looking for 69 runs and their fourth W. They found it behind the bats of Orval Crawford, 27 not out, and Rodarri Smalls, 22 not out. Extras chipped in 15 for a total of 70 and the Lucas victory—all inside nine overs and the loss of two wickets.
The win pushed Lucas ahead of Suburbia in the Clement “Busta” Lawrence 40-Overs Premier League points table with a record of 4-3.
Spice Island Cricket Club vs. Atlantis Cricket Club – NY
Atlantis Won by Forfeiture
Atlantis won the toss under an overcast sky and a sixty-percent chance of rain. They offered the first strike to Spice Island, opening the inning with Abdullah Syed, 4, and Kibo Samuel, 24. However, it was a defiant knock of 45 (1×6, 5x4s) from the willow of Andy Mahase that spiced up a somewhat lethargic Spice Island inning that saw the scoreboard read 200 for 9 in the late start 35 overs match up.
It is noteworthy that skipper Clint Chastou enjoyed a fine knock of 38 before being dismissed LBW off the bowling of Kellon Carmichael, while Damien Reed and Gregory Anthony each contributed 21 to the Spice Island total. Extras were generous with 25.
Atlantis’ Kellon Carmichael was the pick of the bowlers picking up 3 for 39 off his seven overs, Prashanth Nair 2 for 31, and Dillon Bourne 2 for 34. Steve Roopnarine and Orlando Kirton enjoyed one wicket apiece as the Spice Island inning wrapped up at exactly 200 runs. It soon became a wrap for the day as the rainy skies opened up relentlessly for over an hour.
As players huddled in cars and some under a single tent watching the puddles accumulate around the outfield. Still, more so on an uncovered matting, it soon became evident that the match was over, and Atlantis would be awarded the five points through Spice Island’s forfeiture.
