Deandra Dottin Five-For Takes Windies Women 1-0 Up

Deandra Dottin took five wickets for 34 runs to give the West Indies a close, 16-run victory over the Momentum Proteas at Buffalo Park Stadium in East London on Wednesday. The visitors go one-nil up in the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series.

The Windies posted 214/7 in their allotted overs after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Fifties from Hayley Matthews (56) at the start of the innings and Britney Cooper (55*) at the latter stage of the innings helped the side along when spinners, Dane van Niekerk and Sune Luus got crucial breakthroughs that kept the scoring rate under control.
Other notable contributions came from Dottin and Shemaine Campbelle, who added a respective 28 and 26 runs to the scoreboard.
South Africa’s response got off to a solid start with Trisha Chetty and Laura Wolvaardt sharing a 33-run opening stand before the latter became Anisa Mohammed’s 100th wicket in ODIs.
Dottin took two consecutive wickets in the 23rd over, denying Chetty (47) a half century and trapped Lizelle Lee lbw without scoring. South Africa were 82/4 when van Niekerk arrived at the crease, but she was sent back to the hut by Dottin for four, two overs later.
Marizanne Kapp hit the most runs for her team on the occasion of her 50th ODI. She returned an unbeaten 69 off 83 balls including four boundaries and a six. She and Shabnim Ismail put up a good fight with their 70-run, eighth-wicket partnership after the middle order collapsed. Masabata Klaas did not trouble the scorers, returning to the hut without scoring and Chloe Tryon became Dottin’s fifth wicket after she was bowled for seven to end the match.
Kapp was disappointed with the loss but believes that the side can pull the series back in their favor.
“We were in big trouble but I think Shibby (Shabnim Ismail) and I came back really nicely,” she said. “The game was ours to lose in the end, the 69 (runs scored) doesn’t mean anything if your team doesn’t win. I owed the team a good game after my England tour, I got three ducks there, so I’m glad I could do that at least.
“We can only come back stronger,” she continued. “I’m looking forward to Saturday’s game and bouncing back.”
Speaking about her 50th ODI, she is proud to have reached this stage.
“I’m very proud to have gotten this far,” she continued. “It’s obviously a big honour to represent my country. I started off as a bowler and I’m happy that I ended my 50th game as a batter. I think the growth we as a team have shown over the last few years is phenomenal and I’m really excited for the future for both myself and the team.”
The second ODI will take place at the same venue this Saturday.
