Lorgat Praises People Of Guyana After Thrilling Start

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat congratulated the cricket lovers of Guyana for creating a special atmosphere on a thrilling opening day of the ICC World Twenty20 2010 at the National Stadium in Georgetown.

After a day when New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by just two wickets off the penultimate ball of the match and the host West Indies got off to a winning start against qualifier Ireland, Mr Lorgat said: “The crowd were invited to ‘Bring It’ to the ICC World Twenty20 and they certainly did that in great style.

“The stadium was filled to capacity and there was a real carnival flavour packed with colour, noise and passion for our great sport. The people of Guyana, the Government of Guyana, the organising committee and the West Indies Cricket Board should be extremely proud of what they have achieved to make the opening day of the tournament so spectacular.

“The atmosphere in the National Stadium demonstrated the enthusiasm that exists when nation takes on nation at this level and the passion that is generated when national pride is at stake. The benchmark has now been set.”

Sri Lanka takes on Zimbabwe and the host nation West Indies plays England in the next matches in Guyana tomorrow (Monday).
