Windies Women Go Down To NZ In First ODI By Nine Wickets

LINCOLN, New Zealand – West Indies Women suffered a nine-wicket loss, following an unbroken, century, second-wicket stand between New Zealand Women’s captain Suzie Bates and Sara McGlashan in the first One-day International on Saturday.

Stafanie Taylor top scored with 36 for West Indies.

None of the Windies Women’s bowlers distinguished themselves, as Bates, with an undefeated 95 from 91 balls to earn the Player-of-the-Match award, and McGlashan with 60 not out from 61 balls were the backbone of the White Ferns’ successful chase of 182 for victory at Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

Tremayne Smartt claimed the only scalp for the visitors, when she had Samantha Curtis caught behind for 14 in the ninth over.

But the Windies Women failed to make further inroads into the hosts’ batting, as Bates, recently named ICC Women’s ODI Player-of-the-Year, and McGlashan put on 142 to take their side over the finish line with 123 balls remaining.

Earlier, the Caribbean side had an early sign Bates would be a thorn in their side, as they were restricted to 181 for eight from their allocation of 50 overs, after they chose to bat.

Though Stafanie Taylor hit top score of 36, Kycia Knight made 30 and Shanel Daley got 24, the Windies Women lost wickets at regular intervals, as Bates collected 2-25 from seven overs and Sophie Devine took 2-43 from 10 overs.

The second of three ODIs takes place on Monday (5:30 pm on Sunday East Caribbean Time) at the same venue.
