Stafanie Taylor produced a vintage all-round batting display while Aaliyah Alleyne held her nerve at the death as the West Indies edged Scotland by seven runs in a tense ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 encounter at Headingley.
The victory gave the sixth-ranked West Indies their second win of the tournament, but they were pushed all the way by an inspired Scotland side led by opener Darcey Carter.Stafanie Taylor hit a match-defining unbeaten 47 off just 19 balls, striking three sixes to propel the West Indies to a thrilling seven-run victory over Scotland. After being sent in to bat, the West Indies found themselves under pressure from a disciplined Scottish attack. Katherine Fraser made an early impact, taking a brilliant boundary catch to dismiss Qiana Joseph for 13 before bowling captain Hayley Matthews for 14.
Scotland continued to tighten their grip as Deandra Dottin fell for 14 in her 150th T20 International, while Shemaine Campbelle, fresh from her match-winning effort against New Zealand, was run out for 36. At 85 for five, the Caribbean side looked in danger of posting a below-par total.
However, the return of veteran Stafanie Taylor from injury proved decisive. Taylor injected momentum into the innings with a fearless assault, smashing three sixes in an unbeaten 47 from just 19 deliveries. Supported by Jahzara Claxton’s quick 16, Taylor powered the West Indies to a competitive 153 for six from their 20 overs.
Scotland responded positively, knowing they needed their highest-ever successful T20 International chase. Fraser struck early boundaries before Carter took control, driving confidently through the off side and capitalizing on two dropped catches.
The chase suffered a setback when Matthews removed Fraser for 20 and then dismissed Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce for a duck. Matthews finished with impressive figures of 3 for 19, while Afy Fletcher also chipped in with a wicket.
Despite losing partners, Carter remained composed. The opener battled cramp and continued to anchor the innings, reaching a maiden World Cup half-century and keeping Scotland in contention. Together with Ailsa Lister, who contributed 33, Carter added a crucial partnership that brought the target within reach.
With Scotland needing a strong finish, Alleyne delivered the decisive blow. The seamer claimed Carter for 59 before removing Ailsa Lister and Kirstie Gordon in a superb penultimate over. Her figures of 3 for 11 effectively ended Scotland’s hopes of a famous upset.
Needing 17 runs from the final over, Scotland continued to fight but ultimately finished on 146 all out, falling seven runs short.
Taylor’s explosive late innings and Alleyne’s clutch bowling ensured the West Indies escaped with victory, while Scotland earned widespread praise for a spirited performance that pushed one of the tournament favorites to the limit.
