Guyanese-born Under-19 national youth player and Atlantis’ 2013 MVP and Shevonne Mentis Educational Scholarship Fund award recipient Alex Amsterdam, was yesterday elected men’s cricket captain of Atlantis Cricket Club – NY, at the club’s 48th Annual General Meeting.
The prolific middle-order batsman and off-spinner has been a part of the core of Atlantis’ arsenal since joining the club three years ago. In an invited comment, Alex Amsterdam said, “I would like to make Atlantis Cricket Club, a better one, and taking our young talented team to the next level of winning a championship. With a well disciplined team and a very supportive organization, I believe we can achieve our goals.”
The New York based club held its bi-annual elections for its Executive Board at its Annual General Meeting. The unprecedented turnout of members elected Steve Welcome as President, Herbert Newton, Executive Vice President, Courtney LeGall, Vice President, John Aaron, Secretary, Keith Aaron, Treasurer, Samantha Ramataur, Asst. Secty. Treas., and Lester Hooper, Manager.
In its first ever election of a women’s cricket captain, Atlantis elected US national women’s cricketer Samantha Ramataur, as its women’s cricket captain. Ramataur, an all-rounder, has represented Atlantis in several matches including the 2013 Atlanta Women’s T20 championship in Atlanta and the Metallica Cup last July in New York. Atlantis won both tournaments with unbeaten records.
The incoming Atlantis Executive Board is expected to look at ways of implementing a comprehensive women’s cricket program, in its effort to help grow the sport among women in the New York metropolitan area, and by extension, the USA.
The Atlantis Executive Board will serve a two-year term until 2016.
