EACA 40-Overs Tournament
After posting a 1-1 record in the past four weeks, coupled with a scheduled bye week and the unavailability of a park, Atlantis Cricket Club – NY was back in the winning column with a comprehensive 170 run win over Arsenal Cricket Club at Heckscher State Park last Sunday.
With a warm early spring sunshine day, Atlantis winning the toss and electing to bat first posted 319 all out off 38.1 overs. Top scorers were Jonathan Foo with a well-made 86. He was unfortunately run out when his skipper Alex Amsterdam drove a ball back along the wicket and the ball touched the finger of the Arsenal bowler Sayyad Wasfi, before caroming unto the stumps at the non-striker’s end, with Foo backing up down the track. It was a rather unfortunate run-out, as Foo was stroking the ball very cleanly (7x4s and 7x6s) at the time and no doubt was on his way to his first century playing for Atlantis, this season.
Skipper Amsterdam would go on to make a splendid 79 (8x4s, 1×6) before lifting one short of the long on boundary, and being caught off the bowling of Jamal Rayhan. Amsterdam and Foo’s wickets followed the opening stand of 35 and 24 off the bats of Ryan Sukhdeo and Jason Greaves respectively. Atlantis posting north of 250 was never in question, as the tail-enders also contributed with the bats – Jamiel Jackman, 25, and Nasim Uddin, 10, along with Prashanth Nair’s knock of 11 (1×6, 1×4), took the Atlantis total up to 319, with Extras contributing 39. The pick of the Arsenal bowlers were Jamal Rayhan 3 for 87 off 8 overs, and Sumil Ghandi and Sayyad Wasfi each with two wickets at 67 and 46, respectively.
Arsenal XI in reply could only muster up 149 all out off 24.2 overs. Top scorers were opener Shezad Iqbal, 27, Aarif Markti, 23, Neel Patel, 18, and Mustafa Moez and Gazi Rehman, each with 16. Abid Hamandi was run out for 14. The spin of Atlantis’ Nasim Uddin proved to be the Father’s Day wrecker, gift-wrapping 6 for 33 off 7.2 overs, including two maidens. Lijo Mazhuvanchery, Casper Davis, Jr., and Prashanth Nair each grabbed one Arsenal scalp for 48, 28, and 26, respectively. There were 24 extras.
Atlantis plays host to Everest/ACS this Sunday at Heckscher State Park, while Arsenal visits the Phantoms at Lido Beach. All matches begin at 1:00pm.
