Queens Borough President Helen Marshall will join Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe Monday, May 9th at 11 a.m. to officially open a new cricket field in Baisley Pond Park.
The field, which is expected to be heavily-used, is located near the Baisley and Rockaway boulevards intersection at 129th Street, near August Martin High School.
“My capital allocation toward this new cricket field will provide our organized cricket leagues and participating schools with a natural grass turf field with proper irrigation and ADA access to all facilities,” said Marshall. The Borough President provided $650,000 from her FY08 capital budget for the design and construction of the new official-size field that includes a “green” drainage system and plantings of dogwood and flowering trees, shrubs and grasses.
Baisley Pond Park was created hundreds of years ago when farmers dammed several streams to create a mill pond. In the 1850s the pond actually served as a water supply for Brooklyn.
The park also has the historical distinction of being the site where the remains – several molars and a bone fragment – of an American mastodon were found by city workers in the late 1800s.
Since she became Borough President in 2002, Marshall has allocated more than $140 million to the borough’s parks, their facilities and fields.
