Canada Finish Undefeated While USA Qualify For Repechage
Canada defeated Bermuda by 90 runs on the final day of the ICC Americas U19 Division 1 Championships in Bermuda.
After losing the toss, Canada were bowled out for 202 in the 49th over, and in turn dismissed Bermuda for 112 to cap of a dominant tournament.
In overcast conditions at St David’s Cricket club, the Bermudian bowlers were on top early as the Canadians struggled to get going. Micah Simons and Chare Smith bowled tight in the early stages, restricting Canada to 2-46 in the 16th over. Thursaanth Anantharajah played a patient innings, joining forces with Harsh Thaker to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Bermuda were in need of a breakthrough, which came thanks to skipper, Delray Rawlins, as he dismissed Anantharajah for 58 off 102 deliveries. Thaker continued his rich vein of form, pass 50, before falling to Charles Trott for 67.
Rain interrupted the match in 47th over, and upon the return, Canada threw away their wickets to be dismissed for 202. Simons picked up four wickets for Bermuda, while Rawlins, Smith and Trott had two apiece.
The Bermudan innings started with heavy black clouds overhead and the batsmen we slow to get going. Jade Morrisey was dismissed early as the Bermudans struggled to rotate the strike. When Azande Furbert was dismissed in the 14th over, the score was 3-17. From here, the innings would only get worse. Muhammad Khan picked up another two wickets, while Haseeb picked up his third when he trapped Charles Trott on the crease for a duck. At 7-32, Bermuda were in need of a miracle, however this never eventuated, as they were dismissed for 112.
Harsh Thaker picked up his second Man of the Match for the tournament, for his 67 and 2 wickets. Thaker was also awards Batsman of the tournament, as well as tournament MVP for his outstanding tournament. Thaker scored 261 runs from his 4 innings, with a top score of 121 and an average of 65.23. With the ball, Thaker took 5 wickets, including best figures of 3-38.
Bermuda’s Chare Smith was awards the bowler of the tournament as capturing 13 wickets at 10.15, which Sarbjot Sivia was awarded wicketkeeper of the tournament.
By finishing second, USA qualified for the repechage event to be held later this year, while Canada earnt a position at the U19 Cricket World Cup. Additionally, Canada will travel to Jamaica on the 20th July to participate in the WICB U19 Regional Tournament.
