ICC Americas U-19 Tournament | Scorecard
After severe weather conditions and format modifications, the ICC Americas U-19 Tournament resumed today with team USA competing against their tournament host and northern rival, Canada. When play finally got under way, the Canadian team quickly established a strong foundation and eventually had a comfortable winning finish.
USA’s captain and opening batsmen Steven Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first, contributing 30 runs to the scoreboard. Both Vice-captain Krish Goel and right-handed batsman Patrick Palmer each added 22 runs, respectively.
However, Canada’s off-spinner and right-handed batsman Nikhil Dutta’s resilience hindered USA’s batting efforts as he took five crucial wickets. USA ended their innings at 158 all out for 46.2 overs.
Canada’s innings started comfortably and the team managed to reach their target with almost ten overs to spare. At one point, USA did have a beacon of hope in the form of Ryan Persaud who obtained 2 important wickets with Canada losing 3 wickets for 6 runs. However, in the end, Nikhil Dutta held his nerves and led Canada to a predictable win with five wickets to spare.
USACA National Coach said after the match; “This is not the start to the tournament we were after. The weather conditions have been very challenging here in Toronto and sitting around for two days hasn’t been ideal preparation, but that is no excuse for not batting out our 50 overs. The guys really weren’t able to settle and gain a rhythm and that is disappointing.
We play Bermuda on Friday and it is really important that we apply ourselves better and give the best account of ourselves”.
Canada will play Bermuda on Saturday with the USA having the bye.
