Here is the weekly round-up of matches played on Sunday, May 15, 2022 in the Metropolitan Cricket League.

Sumon Bari of Pioneer Cricket Club struck 52 which came off 35 balls.

Week 1 – Match Round-Up
Suburbia Sports Club vs. Pioneer Cricket Club
Suburbia Sports Club won by 195 runs

Suburbia won the toss and opted to take the first strike. They soon racked up 270 for 4 in the 28-overs encounter. Opener Andre Lindsay top-scored up an impressive 96 off 84 deliveries (4x6s, 10x4s) before being bowled by Sumon Bari and missing a season-opener ton. Matthew Burey backed him up with 74 (1×6, 10x4s), Janyo Beckford, an overseas registrant, was not out on 45, while Mansoor Hussain chipped in 33. Sumon Bari with 2 for 79 and Ricky Hallal with 2 for 80 claimed the four Suburbia wickets.

In response, Pioneer could only muster 75 runs from the seven players who made it to the middle of the suburban neighborhood. Warren Grey, Nicholas Hallal, and Roy Tully did not have a chance to tour the batting neighborhood.

Sumon Bari top-scored with 52 off 35 balls, including 3x6s and 5x4s. The only other Pioneer who ventured into the suburbia neighborhood was Charles Mason with 12. The Suburbia wickets were shared among Dave Erskine, 3 for 21, Janyo Beckford, 2 for 7, and Cuthbert Mendonca, 2 for 24.

Sheffield Cricket Club vs. Villagers Sports Club
Villagers Sports Club won by 6 Wickets.

In a 30-overs delayed start opening day match-up at Canarsie Park, Villagers registered their first win of the 2022 season with a decisive six-wicket victory over the Akeem Dodson led Sheffield Cricket Club. Villagers won the toss and opted to bowl first, skittling out a hapless Sheffield for a meager 88 in 24.1 overs. Zahib Tariq with 26 and Muhammad Bajwa with 16 were the only batsmen to trouble the village people by reaching double-figures.

Seamer George Adams was the village ram, clobbering 4 for 30 off his six overs; Aldean Elliott chipped in with 3 for 11 off 5.1 overs.

In their Canarsie Parade response, the Villagers lost four wickets along the way before recording the victory at 89 in 16.4 overs. The main contributors were Alex Amsterdam, who top-scored with 29, Bjorn Brown with 19, Rishi Pandey with 10, and Marvin Darlington with six not-out. Gajanand Singh and Muhammed Bajwa grabbed two villagers for 22 and 25, respectively.

Fourteen year-old Jayden Higgins of Queens United Sports Club during his knock of 41 that came from 31 deliveries.

Queens United Sports Club vs. Spice Island Cricket Club
Queens United Sports Club won by 20 runs.

Battling at Idlewild “Lords” Cricket Ground in Queens, host Queens United Sports Club had an opening day spiced up victory over Spice Island Cricket Club in their 40-overs contest.

Winning the toss and batting first, Queens United’s Akeem Dewar, an overseas registrant, notched 62 off 52 deliveries, including 3x4s and three maximums. Youth player Jayden Higgins had a handsome contribution of 41 off 31 balls, including four rope-clearing responses before being caught by a substitute player. Andrew Davis, another overseas registrant, chipped in with 30 for the Queens XI’s 206 total. Nine Queens United scalps were shared among eight bowlers employed by Spice Island, with Gregory Anthony 2 for 21 and Larando Best, an overseas registrant, 2 for 32.

Spice Island, in response, reached a respectable 186 all-out in 38.1 overs. The top-spicer was Willie Charles with 30, followed by Devon Jones, 27, and Kemron Alexander, 22, with extras matching the latter contribution. The eight scalps were shared among seven Queens United bowlers, with Andrew Davis securing 2 for 37 off seven overs. He was the pick of the bowlers.

Ronaldo Ali Mohamed picked up a fifer against Westbury Cricket Club.

Westbury Cricket Club vs. Atlantis Cricket Club – NY
Atlantis CC won by five wickets.

Winning the toss, Atlantis invited hosts Westbury to occupy the middle first. Westbury posted an under-performing 98 all out in 26.2 overs. The Westbury batters reaching double-figures were Kemar Marshall, 25, Romaine Johnson, 15, Roberto Simpson, 14, and Carlos Green, 11.

Atlantis’ overseas registrant Ronaldo Ali Mohamed enjoyed a fiver, capturing five Westbury wickets for 23 runs off seven overs. Spinner Prashanth Nair scalped 2 for 18, with skipper Greg Robinson and Demetrius Adams each snaring one wicket apiece for nine runs off three overs.

Atlantis set a target of 99 off 40 overs, lost five wickets along the way to their first win of the 2022 season. Top scorers were Garfield DeRoche, 33 not out, vice-captain Randall Wilson, 23, and Giovanni Letren, an overseas registrant, who chipped in 15. Joseph Brown, a Westbury overseas registrant, was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 32 off 3.3 overs for the hosts.

Staten Island Cricket Club vs. Lucas Cricket Club
Lucas CC won by one wicket.

Visitors Staten Island Cricket Club lost the toss and was invited by their host Lucas Cricket Club to have a bat at Marine Park.

A half-century (56) by Shankar Ramakrishnan anchored the Staten Island ship’s inning total of 133. He was supported by opener Abdul Choudhury’s 17 and Aneal Rooplal’s 11. They were the only batters to reach double-figures. The wickets were shared between the seven bowlers used by Lucas, with skipper Rodwell Busgith 2 for 24, Rodarri Small, 2 for 25, and Kiron Thomas 2 for 27, demonstrating some metal.

Set a target of 134, Lucas barely sky-walked over Staten Island, responding with 134 for nine and the victory, as the bottom order of the batting line-up collapsed after the top-order batters had posted – Orval Crawford, 37, Rodwell Busgith, 28, Reston Reid, 22, and Ibrahim Zahoor, 16.
