Cosmos Win Season Opener

Cosmos, the Metropolitan cricket league defending champions registered a comfortable 97 runs victory over Lucas at Floyd Bennett field on May 9th. A steady wind and chilly temperature delayed the start of the match however after some deliberations over weather conditions were suitable for play the officials decided that the two teams will add a few extra layers of clothing and proceed.

Cosmos, led by former Jamaica national opening batsman Ordelmo Peters, won the toss and elected to bat. A patient second wicket partnership or 83 runs between Peters (44) and Dennis Evans (34) repaired the inning after the early lost of Norman Hutchinson. Lucas then bowled themselves back into the game by picking three quick wickets and at 90 for 4, cosmos suffered a brief hiccup. George Adams and young Marlon Persaud featured in a crucial 91 runs partnership to give their team solid recovery. Adams struck a breezy 67 runs (5 sixes, 4 fours) off 44 balls while Young Marlon Persaud’s continue to improve with his exposure at a high level of cricket, offered excellent support to his senior partner with a patient 23 runs. At 181 for 6, the veterans Ashmul Ali and commentator extraordinaire Lenny Achaibar then took cosmos to an imposing 213 for 7 of 35 overs.

In reply, Lucas batsmen struggled to get the new ball off the square against Cosmos opening bowlers who were backed up by some excellent fielding.  Persaud held on to an excellent catch running from mid wicket to backward of square to start Lucas slide.  Sham Ali snared 2 for 21 in his spell while Melroy Kingston bagged 3 for 14, Evans and Achaibar then spun Lucas into submission with 2 wickets each to seal a comfortable victory for Cosmos.
