Atlantis Cricket Club – NY continues to live up to its motto of being more than just another cricket club in the New York metropolitan area. Established in 1966, the club has played cricket in three leagues, the Long Island Cricket League, Eastern American Cricket Association, and the New York Metropolitan Cricket League.

Over its 56-year history, Atlantis has been responsible for several initiatives benefitting the community, including donations of flood and other items for hurricane victims, toys for children, clothing drives, canned food items distribution, and its flagship initiative, an annual education scholarship fund. Thus, practicing its motto Atlantis…more than just cricket!

Last Sunday, after its New York Metropolitan Cricket League fixture against Staten Island Cricket Club, Atlantis presented one of its two educational scholarship awards for 2022.

Starting in 2001, following the tragic circumstances of the World Trade Center known as 9-11, the scholarship fund was initiated in the memory of Shevonne Mentis. Ms. Mentis was the daughter of one of the club’s long-standing and honorary life members Aubrey Mentis. Ms. Mentis died at the World Trade Center, and for the first 20 years, the fund distributed more than $35,000.00 in the name of the 25-year-old Borough of Manhattan Community College student.

Atlantis’ Treasurer Keith Aaron and Liaison Officer Leslie “Tulu” Lewis passed away last year, so the fund decided to distribute future financial scholarships in their names. The two former Executive Board members and Desmond Thompson, a former club Treasurer who passed away in 2017, will forever be seen as standout members of the club.

This year the Keith Aubrey Aaron Education Scholarship Award was presented to Demetrius Adams, a 22-year-old Hospitality Management major at New York City College of Technology. The Anguilla-born cricketing all-rounder is now in his second year playing for Atlantis.

Donna Brown-Aaron, the widow of Keith Aaron and their son Kwesi Aaron, presented the check to Adams. Mrs. Brown-Aaron noted, “Keith Aaron was a simple man, but a giant of a man, who never asked for anything, but was always willing to give of himself and his time. He would give the shirt off his back.”

In accepting the award, Demetrius Adams said he was very grateful to Atlantis and is proud to be representing the club at cricket, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle. Alex and Terry Adams represented Atlantis for several seasons and toured the United Kingdom with the club a few years back.
