Bermuda’s chances of winning the Americas Region Championship suffered a major blow as the USA surprised the host nation, defeating them by six wickets.
The USA won the toss and elected to field and again Bermuda lost their opener with one run on the board.
A 96 run second wicket partnership between Jekon Edness and Stephen Outerbridge was the best of the innings as Bermudian bats struggled to keep wickets intact and put runs on the board. For the American Muhammad Ghous, Steve Massiah and Lennox Cush kept the pressure on and at the end of their 50 overs the host had set a modest target of 188/9. Stephen Outerbridge had another good knock top scoring with 48, while Lennox Cush 3/30 was the top bowler for the USA.
The USA suffered a brief scare, losing their first wicket for 28 runs but a 113 run second wicket partnership between Sushil Nadkarni (57) and skipper Steve Massiah (67) put the United States on course to victory. Their target was passed with 3.2 overs remaining in the game.
The victory now creates an opportunity for a three way tie on the final day should Bermuda defeat Canada and the USA win as expected. Net run rate will determine the winner and Canada put themselves in the driver’s seat with an unbelievable win over hapless Bahamas scoring their target of 100 runs in just 8.4 overs.
Tomorrow is a rest day with the final day of the 50 over matches scheduled for Thursday.
