What’s next for sports in Indianapolis?
Cricket, apparently.
Mayor Greg Ballard told a group of business leaders that he wants cricket to play a larger role in the Circle City. The story got picked up in the Times of India, with the headline reading, “Indianapolis plans to build cricket stadium.”
The stadium would be part of the Indianapolis World Sports Park, a facility under construction on the east side. The 40-acre complex would host international-level events. Cricket is included among other sports like lacrosse, hurling, rugby and international basketball.
Ballard told the Times he wanted to show the city’s commitment to international sports becoming a world-class city. The mayor said it would be yet another high-profile event for Central Indiana, noting that the Indianapolis 500 is the largest single-day sporting event in the world and that the Circle City hosted the Super Bowl in 2012.
“When people around the world think of cricket, I want them to think Indianapolis,” Ballard was quoted as saying in the Times.
Ballard and other city leaders are on a week long trip to India to explore economic opportunities and promote cultural understanding.
