On February 29, nearly 40 excited students turned up to kick off the elementary schools cricket program in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
The students were first engaged in skill-building drills (“Yes, No, Wait” “Gate Bowling” “Target Batting”), after which they played intrasquad games against each other. Coaches present for the program launch were Jamie Harrison and Sham Chotoo of Maryland Youth Cricket, and Ren Logan, Roy Fernando and Hemant Samuel of Bowie Boys and Girls Club cricket.
The 90-minute clinic was loud and full of excitement, and the parents all seemed to enjoy learning cricket along with their children. Afterwards, many parents expressed a desire to become assistant coaches with their school teams. Outdoor practice will start in two weeks time, followed by school vs. school games, and culminating in a county championship.
Schools cricket is exploding in Maryland, as our great game sweeps across the state. Congratulations to all involved!
