Maryland Youth Cricket Expands With New Age Division, Girls Competition

Maryland Youth Cricket Girl

Maryland Youth Cricket is doing what it does best – growing the game.

In previous years, the state championship competition had two age categories: 11U and 15U. This year, a third age division has been added, 13U, and the 15U division has become 16U. This is in response to the growing numbers in Maryland junior cricket, and the desire to have players competing in age-appropriate conditions.

Maryland also welcomes three new programs to the fold this season: Chantilly in 11U, Ellicott City in 11U and 13U, and the Washington Cricket League Cubs in our 16U competition.

And perhaps most exciting of all, Maryland this year welcomes the first all-girls cricket league in the United States, featuring four teams made up of entirely female players and coaches. Maryland Youth Cricket has for many years been determined to bring more girls into cricket, and Sham Chotoo of Bowie has led this effort for us. The girls’ division is primarily a result of his tireless work, and MYCA extends its gratitude. Look for a follow up article soon with more details and reaction to this watershed moment in American cricket.
