Commonwealth Cricket League
In the first round of the Commonwealth Cricket League Premier Division Group Games, Melbourne defeated Rosedale Royals last Sunday at Flushing Meadows Park by 76 runs.
Rosedale won the toss and asked Melbourne to take first strike on a wicket affected somewhat by the overnight showers. Melbourne found runs hard to come by and wickets fell at regular intervals.
Opener Arif Islam could not find a partner to steady things as Rosedale pacers did a good job of restricting Melbourne to 80 for 5. Arif batted patiently but sensible before felling for 38. Captain Dhillon Singh batting at 7 and top scored with 40 as Melbourne reached 163 all out in 34.1 overs.
Rosedale must have felt confident of hitting the target but Melbourne spinners Shojib Zahir (6 overs, 6 wickets for 19 runs) and Pranay Subra (7 overs, 4 wickets for 24 runs) was spot on.
Rosedale was all out for 87 in 20.1 overs with only opener Mark Lionel showing any resistance with a brilliant 40.
