Orbit “A” Is 2017 NYBCL Premier Division Champion
Defending champion Warriors Cricket Club was dethroned by Orbit “A” in the final of the New York Bangladesh Cricket League (NYBCL) Premier Division by four wickets, at Flushing Meadow Park on October 22nd.
Warriors Cricket Club won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision was based on their strong batting lineup which included NYBCL’s highest run-scorer Hemindra Ramdihal. Orbit Cricket Team’s opening bowlers Lisan Chowdhury and Arif Islam bowled a disciplined spell, with Arif providing the first breakthrough; picking up the prized wicket of Ramdihal in his first over.
Orbit spinners Nasir Uddin and Abu Taher bowled fantastic spells, picking up a total of 7 wickets. Warriors ended up with 117, Saleh Amin and Andre “Rusty” Kirton batted sensibly and provided a late inning spark, hitting 27 and 26 respectively.
In Orbit’s inning, they lost one of their openers in the first over. However, Imtiaz Asif and Nadim Chowdhury stabilized the inning with a 58-run partnership. Asif was caught off the bowling of Andre Kirton for a well-played 36 and Chowdhury top scored with 38. Warrior’s leg spinner Sojib Azad brought some intensity and late drama to the game by picking up three quick wickets.
However, Orbit’s vice-captain Arif Islam and new addition Lisan Chowdhury held their nerves and finished the task with four wickets in hand and six overs remaining. Orbit’s Abu Taher was named Man-of-the-Match for his four wickets haul. Nadim Chowdhury was awarded the trophy for the highest run scorer of the match. This was the fourth consecutive time Orbit Cricket Team and Warriors Cricket Club faced off for the NYBCL championship title in the last two years. Warriors won the last three matches.
