United They Stand Exigent Liberty
Long Island United Cricket Club vs Liberty Cricket Club
The Sun Blazing, a cool breeze blowing, 2 games on adjacent freshly laid pitches, and you could not be blamed for thinking that you had finally made your way to cricket heaven.
Long Island United was up against Liberty Cricket Club in Brentwood II. Liberty Cricket Club took first strike and was tested by a fiery opening spell by 16 year old Anwer Khan and the Captain Omer Iqbal. Omer picked up two wickets but the young gun Anwer was again let down by poor catching. Anwer still showed maturity beyond his years and kept in running hard and finally picked up a wicket with an acrobatic leap from the keeper Shehzad Iqbal in front of almost second slip. New York under 19 selectors would be well served by keeping an eye out for this developing all rounder.
Long Island United was set a target of 196, and chased it down comfortably in 31 overs, mainly due to a mature yet flamboyant knock of 76 from the opener Omer Ali. The sixes and fours were a treat but the real pleasure was measured defense and due respect given to good deliveries. The main contributors were supported by enthusiastic cameos from their team mates, and it was a united and cohesive effort.
