On Sept. 8th, at Mercer County Park, The Philadelphians won the toss and opted to bat first against the formidable New Jersey Stallions. The stakes were high, and both teams knew they had to give their all in this Minor League Cricket 2024 East Division clash.

As the game began, The Philadelphians looked for a solid start. Opening batsman Christopher Van Tull came out with aggression, smashing 16 off just 8 balls, including a six that soared into the sky. But his quick start was cut short when Rohan Mustafa, with a well-aimed delivery, took him out in the second over. With the scoreboard reading 17 for 1, Ryan Scott tried to stabilize the innings, but his measured knock of 21 off 26 balls wasn’t enough to keep the momentum going, as he fell LBW to Supreet Madaan.

Stephen Wiig
Stephen Wiig played a crucial knock, hitting 27 from 9 deliveries and ensuring a win for New Jersey Stallions.

The Philadelphians were now depending on their star, Bhaskar Yadram, to rescue them. Yadram, calm and composed, played a vital anchor role. His 62 off 44 balls, which included three fours and five massive sixes, gave The Philadelphians a much-needed push. He played with flair, picking gaps and punishing loose deliveries, but he lacked enough support from the other end. Taahaa Warraich contributed a handy 29, but the rest of the batting line-up collapsed under pressure.

Despite Yadram’s valiant effort, The Philadelphians could only manage 139 runs in their 20 overs. The New Jersey Stallions’ bowlers had been tight and disciplined. Supreet Madaan was the star with the ball, finishing with remarkable figures of 2 wickets for just 14 runs in 4 overs. Jonathan Foo and Juanoy Drysdale also bowled effectively, with Drysdale taking 3 crucial wickets.

As the second innings began, the Stallions knew they had to chase down 140 runs in 20 overs to secure a victory. Saiteja Mukkamalla and Aman Patel opened for them, but their start was shaky. Mukkamalla, after hitting two big sixes, was bowled by Drysdale for 16. Aman Patel followed soon after, dismissed for just 3, leaving the Stallions at 28 for 2.

At this point, the pressure was on, but Supreet Madaan and Raymond Ramrattan steadied the ship. Madaan’s solid 23 off 23 balls and Ramrattan’s quickfire 11 provided much-needed stability. However, the game took a sharp turn when both of them fell in quick succession, leaving the Stallions teetering at 57 for 4.
With the Stallions in trouble, all eyes turned to the lower order. Rohan Mustafa and Hiren Patel tried to keep the chase alive, but it was a rapid 18 from Md Farhad Reza and an explosive 27 off just 9 balls from Stephen Wiig that turned the game in favor of the Stallions. Wiig’s innings, with two fours and two towering sixes, came just when his team needed it most.

In the end, the Stallions reached their target with just one over to spare. They finished on 140 for 6 in 19 overs, winning the game by 4 wickets. The Philadelphians fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the depth of the Stallions’ batting lineup.

Juanoy Drysdale’s efforts with the ball (3 for 35) were notable, but it was the all-round performance of the Stallions, and particularly Wiig’s late blitz, that stole the show.
