Suryakumar Rescue Act Sets Up India’s Win Over USA

India opened their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a measured 29-run victory over the United States of America in Match 3 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, with Suryakumar Yadav producing a captain’s knock to anchor his side to a competitive total.

After winning the toss, USA opted to field under lights, a decision that appeared justified early on as India suffered a stuttering start. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck by Ali Khan in the second over, while Ishan Kishan’s brisk 20 off 16 balls ended when he was caught off Shadley van Schalkwyk. The pressure intensified when Tilak Varma (25 off 16) and Shivam Dube fell in quick succession, leaving India reeling at 46 for 4 inside six overs.

From that precarious position, Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings with authority and composure. Batting with trademark innovation and calm, he paced his knock to perfection, finding gaps rather than forcing the pace early. Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya failed to provide sustained support, but Suryakumar held firm, later accelerating in the death overs. His unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, decorated with 10 fours and four sixes, lifted India to 161 for 9, a total that looked increasingly defendable on a surface offering grip for the bowlers.

For the USA, van Schalkwyk was outstanding with the ball, claiming 4 for 25 in his four overs, while Mohammad Mohsin (1 for 16) and Harmeet Singh (2 for 26) maintained control through the middle overs. Despite some expensive spells, notably from Saurabh Netravalkar, the USA attack ensured India never fully ran away with the innings.

Chasing 162, the United States innings never truly settled after a shaky start. Mohammed Siraj struck early, removing Andries Gous and Saiteja Mukkamalla inside the powerplay, while Arshdeep Singh accounted for Monank Patel to leave the visitors struggling at 13 for 3. Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthy attempted to rebuild, adding stability through a patient stand, with Kumar scoring 34 and Krishnamurthy contributing 37.

A late surge from Shubham Ranjane, who smashed 37 off just 22 deliveries, briefly raised hopes of a dramatic finish. However, disciplined bowling from India in the final overs shut the door on any comeback. Siraj finished with 3 for 29, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two wickets apiece to restrict the USA to 132 for 8.

Suryakumar Yadav was rightly named Player of the Match, his innings proving the decisive difference as India began their World Cup campaign with a solid, if hard-earned, win.
