It was a beautiful day for cricket at the Baisley (The Cage) with lots of spectators on hand to witness this intriguing encounter between the young Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ) team and the veteran Hillside Cricket Club.
Hillside Cricket Club won the toss and decided to take first strike in glorious sunshine at the Cage. Hillside opening pair of Aleem Khan and Harry Heeralal walks out to the middle with the young Rocky Kowchai and Rayhanul Islam sharing the new ball for the MMZ.
First to go was Khan, the aggressor who hit Kowchai for a massive six and the next delivery had his off stump knocked back. Nedesh Basdeo joins the veteran Heerall at the crease and the pair was batting well until skipper Azurdeen Mohammed brought himself on from the Foch Blvd end. He immediately struck, Heeralall trying to go big only to hit the ball high in the air and Mohammed did the rest. At the other end Islam was bowling a good line and length, was replaced by the young Amarnauth Persaud who bowled with good pace and control, the Hillside batsmen find it difficult by some good bowling from Persaud and the introduction of the off spinner Zaaid Majeed. Amarnauth cleaned up Basdeo for a well played 26 and then had Naushad Khan lbw for a duck.
Majeed at the other end was enjoying a great day with the ball, first he had Syed Alli brilliantly caught by Ramdihall at long on for 6, he then had Zamin Khan caught by Mungalsingh for 1. Hillside was eventually bowled out for an even 100 runs. Majeed finish with figures of 4 for 13 off 8 overs, Amarnauth 3 for 18 off 8 his 8 overs.
MMZ started off their innings by losing Azurdeen Mohammed caught in the slips from a good delivery of Syed Alli. That would bring the inform and talented young 17 year old Trevis Ross who could well be on the USA under 19 team to tour Florida in July. Ross average so far for the 2012 EACA season is 40.4 with a total of 202 runs from five innings, he had 75 against Long Island United CC last week. Ross would entertain the huge crowd with some fine cricket shots to all parts of the ground, he struck 3 massive sixes and 4 fours in his knock of 57, at the other end Amarnauth Persaud was picking up his singles and doubles as he was left not out on 20 MMZ knocked off their target off 15.3 overs with 6 wickets in hand.
Final scores in the match were Hillside CC 100 all out off 31 overs. MMZ 104 for 4 off 15.3 overs.
MMZ now on 20 points takes on Arsenal CC at Flushing # 2 ground this Sunday, it will be a great Father Day’s outing, so come out and support the young MMZ team.
