After making light work of the Cayman Islands and Suriname earlier this week at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, the USA returned to the same venue yesterday to do battle against the Bahamas, and when the dust cleared, the USA had won by 8 wickets.
The Bahamas won the toss and decided to bat, but found themselves in immediate trouble when Marc Taylor was bowled off the fourth ball of the day. With the score on 3 for 1, it didn’t get much better for the visitors. With the score on 29, Jemison tried to clear the boundary, and was caught at long off for 15.
The new batsman, Atkinson, was adjudged LBW in the same over, and the Bahamas were teetering on 32 for 3. Greg Taylor and Tappin added 27 for the fourth wicket before Tappin was caught at midwicket off Abhimanyu Rajp and the score was 59 for 4. It should have been 59 for 5, had Orlando Baker not spill a sitter at midwicket. The dropped catch would not be very costly, as Greg Taylor was next to go, caught at deep midwicket by Japen Patel.
The score was 62 for 5. Barry then tried to move the scoring rate along, as he took a couple of sixes of a Ryan Corns’ over, but in the very next over, he was bowled by Baker for 28. The score was then 98 for 6. Brown came in and tried to get some quick runs in the remaining overs, and when he was run out off the last ball of the innings, the score was 113 for 7.
Requiring 114 for victory, the USA promoted Ryan Corns to the opening position, and he and the explosive Steven Taylor walked out to begin the task for the USA. This would not be Taylor’s day; with the score on 24 he was run out for 12. Corns would avenge for any mishap in the run out, by carrying his bat throughout the innings to see USA surpass the Bahamas’ score.
Akeem Dodson joined Corns and the pair added another 10 runs before Dodson miscued a short ball and was caught at midwicket for 9. At 34 for 2, the USA captain, Orlando Baker, joined Corns and the pair took the USA over the finishing line. Ryan Corns finished with a well-played 61 not out.
The USA returns to the field today to take on Bermuda. With both teams undefeated to date, today’s match will see one of these teams losing for the first time in the tournament.
