USA Women Outclass Brazil in T20 Clash

Ritu Singh

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier match between the United States of America Women and Brazil Women took place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at St Albans Club, Corimayo. Brazil won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to restrict the USA’s batting lineup and chase a manageable target.

The USA Women’s innings began with a cautious start. Opener Disha Dhingra played a steady knock, scoring 30 runs off 31 balls before being caught behind off the bowling of Laura Cardoso. However, her opening partner, Gargi Bhogle, failed to get off the mark, falling for a duck in just two deliveries. Chetna Pagydyala also struggled, managing only 1 run before being dismissed by Maria Ribeiro.

The middle order provided some resistance, with skipper and wicketkeeper Anika Kolan anchoring the innings with a patient 34 off 36 balls. Despite the team struggling to accelerate, Tara Norris contributed a valuable 15 off 22 deliveries before falling to Nicole Monteiro. Lower-order contributions remained minimal, with Ritu Singh (1), Isani Vaghela (0), Aditiba Chudasama (3), and Geetika Kodali (1) failing to push the total significantly. The USA managed to post 105/9 in their allotted 20 overs, with extras contributing 9 runs.

Brazil’s bowlers did well to contain the USA batters. Maria Ribeiro was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for just 16 runs in her 4 overs. Laura Cardoso and Nicole Monteiro chipped in with crucial wickets, while the fielding unit backed up the bowling effort, executing three run-outs.

Chasing a modest target of 106, Brazil Women found themselves in deep trouble right from the start. Their innings never got going as USA’s disciplined bowling attack dismantled their batting lineup. The opening pair of Lindsay Boas (4) and Laura Agatha (0) struggled against the pace and accuracy of the American bowlers. Tara Norris provided the early breakthrough, while Ritu Singh dominated with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for just 6 runs in her 4-over spell.

Brazil’s batters found no momentum, with Roberta Avery managing only 3 off 26 balls, Laura Cardoso falling for 1, and captain Carolina Nascimento dismissed for just 1 run. The wickets kept tumbling as the USA bowlers maintained tight lines, not allowing any easy scoring opportunities. Ana Sabino (6) and Maria Silva (7) were the only players to cross 5 runs, but their resistance was brief.

The USA bowling unit showcased exceptional control and aggression. Apart from Singh’s three-wicket haul, Aditiba Chudasama (2/5), Geetika Kodali (1/4), Tara Norris (1/9), and Isani Vaghela (1/1) all contributed to Brazil’s collapse. Brazil was eventually bowled out for just 29 in 19.1 overs, handing the USA a dominant 76-run victory.

Ritu Singh’s all-round performance, including a tight bowling spell and a crucial presence in the field, earned her the Player of the Match award.
