Bangladesh Clinch Historic Second World Cup Win Over Pakistan

Bangladesh got their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 campaign off to a dream start with a commanding seven-wicket victory against Pakistan in Colombo. The win marked Bangladesh’s second-ever triumph at the tournament, both coming against the same opponents.

Pakistan, who won the toss and chose to bat, were immediately put under pressure by Marufa Akter’s fiery pace. The seamer dismissed Omaima Sohail with her first delivery and trapped Sidra Amin next ball to leave Pakistan reeling. Despite brief resistance from opener Muneeba Ali and Rameen Shamim, Bangladesh’s bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals. Nahida Akter removed both set batters, while Shorna Akter wrapped up the lower order with three wickets in just 21 balls. Pakistan could only muster 129 in 38.3 overs, with Rameen Shamim (23) and captain Fatima Sana (22) offering the only notable resistance.

Bangladesh’s reply got off to a shaky start as Diana Baig struck early to dismiss Fargana Hoque for two. But debutant Rubya Haider, playing with maturity well beyond her years, steadied the chase. She built crucial partnerships with Sharmin Akhter, skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, and finally Sobhana Mostary, keeping the innings composed after early stumbles.

Rubya reached her maiden international half-century in style, guiding Bangladesh past the 100-run mark with a boundary through point. Nigar contributed a vital 23 before falling to Fatima Sana, but Sobhana ensured there were no further hiccups. Her brisk 24* off 19 balls, laced with six boundaries, kept the momentum flowing.

Together with Rubya’s unbeaten 54, the pair closed out the match in the 32nd over, securing a comfortable seven-wicket win.

The result is a milestone for Bangladesh, who continue to grow in stature on the global stage. For Rubya, her debut half-century was the highlight of a performance that underlined the team’s promise. Meanwhile, Pakistan will rue their fragile batting display, undone by disciplined Bangladeshi bowling and sharp fielding.

Match Summary:
Pakistan 129 all out in 38.3 overs (Rameen Shamim 23, Fatima Sana 22; Shorna Akter 3/5, Nahida Akter 2/31)
Bangladesh 131/3 in 31.3 overs (Rubya Haider 54, Sobhana Mostary 24; Diana Baig 1/14, Rameen Shamim 1/25)

Result: Bangladesh won by seven wickets.
