Oakland, CA β Texas Super Kings produced a disciplined all-round performance to secure a 22-run victory over San Francisco Unicorns in the opening match of Major League Cricket's Oakland leg, with Amshi de Silva delivering a match-winning display with both ball and in the field.
After posting a competitive 161 for 8 on a bowler-friendly surface, Texas Super Kings bundled out the Unicorns for 139 in 17.4 overs to climb into second place in the standings. De Silva was the architect of the victory, claiming four wickets and producing a spectacular one-handed catch, while debutant Abhimanyu Lamba impressed with two wickets. Donovan Ferreira's explosive 45 off 28 balls proved crucial in setting up the win.Amshi de Silva (left) of Texas Super Kings, who bagged 4 for 28 against the San Francisco Unicorns, celebrates with a teammate. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Texas Super Kings made a positive start through captain Faf du Plessis and Saiteja Mukkamalla. The pair added 72 runs for the opening wicket, providing a strong foundation on a pitch offering assistance to the bowlers throughout the evening.
Du Plessis looked in excellent touch, striking 40 from 24 deliveries, including three sixes, before Hassan Khan broke the partnership. Finn Allen completed a superb catch at long-off to remove the skipper, triggering a collapse in the middle order.
The Super Kings quickly slipped from a commanding position as Rilee Rossouw was dismissed without scoring, Milind Kumar was run out by a direct hit from Matthew Short, and Mukkamalla departed after a valuable contribution. At 92 for 4, the innings was in danger of stalling.
Ferreira then provided the momentum Texas desperately needed. The South African wicketkeeper-batter counterattacked brilliantly, launching four sixes during a blistering 45-run knock from 28 balls. His late assault lifted the Super Kings beyond the 160-mark before Ghulam Mudassar ended his innings with a well-disguised off-cutter. Mudassar finished with 2 for 30, while Brody Couch claimed 2 for 42. Haris Rauf was particularly economical, conceding just 16 runs from his four overs.
Defending 161, Texas Super Kings struck early and never allowed the Unicorns to settle. De Silva led the charge, removing Finn Allen, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Connor Esterhuizen during a devastating opening spell.
The dismissal of Pretorius produced one of the highlights of the tournament. Du Plessis, despite nursing a back injury, launched himself through the air at mid-off to complete a remarkable one-handed catch that brought the Oakland crowd to its feet.
De Silva's influence continued as he ran out Sanjay Krishnamurthi with a direct hit from the deep, leaving San Francisco struggling at 56 for 4 by the end of the powerplay.
Matthew Short attempted to spark a recovery with a brisk 28 from 16 balls but was bowled by Lamba, who enjoyed an impressive MLC debut. The young pacer also removed Hassan Khan to finish with figures of 2 for 22.
Hammad Azam briefly resisted with a 14-ball 20, but de Silva returned to claim his fourth wicket and extinguish any hopes of a late comeback. Brody Couch and Peter Siddle fought hard in the closing stages, yet the target remained out of reach as the Unicorns were dismissed with 14 balls remaining.
De Silva finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 28 from four overs and was deservedly named Player of the Match.
The victory marked an important turnaround for Texas Super Kings after a difficult start to the season. Their disciplined bowling, sharp fielding and Ferreira's decisive contribution with the bat combined to deliver a comprehensive result. For the Unicorns, the defeat at their home venue was a disappointing start to the Oakland leg, while Texas Super Kings left with renewed momentum and a rising position in the standings.
