Villagers Sports Club produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Cornwall Cricket Club by 92 runs in the New York Metropolitan Cricket League (MCL) Clement Busta Lawrence Premier League at Van Cortlandt Park on June 28. Powered by a century from Barrington Bartley and backed by an incisive bowling display led by Shalome Parnell, Villagers posted 283 for 4 before dismissing Cornwall for 191 in 29.1 overs.
Villagers recovered quickly after an early setback when Saif Samaroo fell with only six runs on the board. Opener Joshua Persaud counterattacked with a fluent 59 from 46 deliveries, striking five fours and two sixes to shift the momentum during the Powerplay and early middle overs. His 129-run partnership with Barrington Bartley laid the platform for a formidable total and ensured Cornwall's bowlers spent much of the innings under pressure.Barrington Bartley's century of 106 came off 96 deliveries and included 8 fours and a six. Bartley then took control of the innings with a composed yet authoritative century. His 106 off 96 balls, featuring eight boundaries and a six, anchored the innings while allowing others to play freely around him. Alex Amsterdam added valuable support with 34, before the unbeaten pair of Gajanand Singh (15*) and Brian Barnes (27* off 13) accelerated in the closing overs. Barnes' late cameo, featuring two fours and two sixes, helped Villagers finish strongly on 283 for 4, although Cornwall's bowlers were not helped by conceding 32 wides and 39 extras overall. Ewart Gayle was the most successful bowler with 2 for 35.
Cornwall's chase never gained sustained momentum after Parnell ripped through the top order. He dismissed Steneth Gayle, Fernando Howe and Mario Labban inside the opening seven overs, reducing Cornwall to 28 for 4 and leaving them with a mountain to climb. George Adams and Saif Samaroo chipped in with crucial wickets to keep the pressure firmly on the batting side.
Bruce Blackwood mounted a lone resistance with a sensational 125 from just 80 deliveries, an innings decorated with 10 fours and nine sixes. Despite his aggressive strokeplay, wickets continued to tumble at the opposite end as Cornwall failed to build meaningful partnerships. Once Blackwood ran out of partners, the innings quickly unraveled. Steven Sankar claimed two wickets in the middle overs before Gajanand Singh removed the tail, while Parnell returned to finish with outstanding figures of 4 for 26 from 5.1 overs.
