San Francisco Unicorns strengthened their grip on top spot in the Major League Cricket standings with a commanding nine-wicket victory over MI New York at Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, powered by Lhuan-dre Pretorius' maiden T20 century and an incisive bowling display led by captain Matt Short.
After winning the toss and electing to field, San Francisco struck early when Short removed Quinton de Kock for six in the third over, with Hassan Khan taking the catch. Ryan Rickelton attempted to counterattack, racing to 35 from 21 deliveries, but Short continued his impressive spell by dismissing both Monank Patel and Rickelton during the powerplay to leave MI New York reeling at 56 for 3 after six overs.

Nicholas Pooran and Sunny Patel steadied the innings with a brief partnership before Brody Couch had Pooran caught behind by Pretorius for 19. Anirudh Immanuel then celebrated the first wicket of his Major League Cricket career by bowling Kieron Pollard for 16 in only his second tournament appearance, further denting MI New York's hopes of posting a competitive total.
Sunny Patel top-scored with 32, while Romario Shepherd provided late impetus with an unbeaten 19 from just nine balls. However, San Francisco's disciplined bowling attack prevented any sustained acceleration. Short finished with an outstanding 3 for 24, while Haris Rauf and Aaron Hardie claimed two wickets apiece to restrict MI New York to 143 for 9 from their 20 overs.
Pretorius ensured the chase began at a brisk pace, taking 14 runs from Trent Boult's opening over as he and Finn Allen shared a fluent 52-run opening partnership. Pretorius dominated the powerplay, striking four boundaries and a six before Allen fell for 20, caught by Rickelton off Shepherd immediately after the fielding restrictions ended.
Shepherd briefly pulled MI New York back into the contest with a wicket maiden after Matt Short arrived at the crease, but it proved only a temporary setback. Pretorius and Short settled quickly and combined in an unbeaten second-wicket stand that steadily took the game away from the opposition.
Pretorius reached his half-century in 31 deliveries before accelerating further, taking 16 runs from Sunny Patel's 13th over to leave the target within easy reach. The left-hander produced a flawless innings, finishing unbeaten on a career-best 102 from just 52 balls, an innings featuring 10 fours and six sixes. He sealed both his maiden T20 century and the victory by striking the winning boundary as the Unicorns completed the chase at 146 for 1 in only 15.4 overs with 26 balls to spare. Short remained unbeaten on 19 at the other end.
The victory lifts San Francisco to 10 points, reinforcing its position at the top of the Major League Cricket table with two regular-season matches remaining. The Unicorns will continue their Dallas leg on Friday against the Texas Super Kings, while MI New York face increasing pressure to improve their position before the playoffs.
