Aaron Johnson and Aryan Sidhu Lead Grizzlies to Big Win Over Surf Riders
The Minor League Cricket (MiLC) 2025 West clash between the San Diego Surf Riders and the San Ramon Grizzlies at Davis on September 21 proved to be a showcase of explosive batting, sharp bowling, and a commanding chase. In the end, the Grizzlies emerged victorious with a six-wicket win, chasing down the target with more than four overs to spare.
San Diego Surf Riders, having won the toss, chose to bat first, hoping to set a competitive total. Their innings, however, was plagued by early setbacks. Openers Siddharth Menon and Shehan Fernando both departed cheaply, leaving the Surf Riders under pressure at 13 for 2. Matters worsened when Snell Patel fell without scoring, and by the end of the powerplay, the team was struggling to recover.

The middle order offered brief resistance. Vijaya Ram Nandula played a measured knock of 21, while Skanda Rohit Sharma contributed 8 before being bowled by Harish Kakani. The real spark for San Diego came from Abheyender Singh, who counter-attacked with an aggressive 29 off 20 balls, striking one four and three sixes. His innings lifted the tempo but was cut short just as he looked set for more. Later, Abhinay Reddy Vanipally added a steady 21, while captain Kunj Bhagat chipped in with a valuable unbeaten 22 off 18 deliveries, including a six that gave his side some hope. Despite these efforts, the Surf Riders could only manage 133 for 9 in their 20 overs, a total that looked modest on a good batting surface.
The San Ramon bowlers were disciplined throughout the innings. Ayan Desai bowled with control, finishing with figures of 2 for 20, while Adnesh Tondale matched him with 2 for 19. Harish Kakani’s double strike further pegged back San Diego, and Vedant Jain chipped in with one wicket while maintaining a miserly economy rate. Their combined effort ensured that the Surf Riders never built sustained momentum, with wickets falling at regular intervals.
In response, San Ramon’s chase began with fireworks. Opener Aaron Johnson launched a blistering assault on the Surf Riders’ bowlers, smashing 42 runs from just 13 balls at a staggering strike rate of over 300. His knock included five towering sixes that shifted the game firmly in favor of the Grizzlies within the opening overs. Though the team lost Rahul Jariwala for 8 and Kranthi Kumar for a duck, Johnson’s onslaught ensured the required run rate was never a concern.
After Johnson’s dismissal, Aryan Sidhu anchored the innings with a composed 42 from 36 deliveries, striking five sixes to keep the scoreboard ticking. At the other end, veteran Ruvindu Gunasekera played cautiously for his 16, but it was Harish Kakani’s explosive cameo that sealed the match. His 26 off just 12 balls, featuring three sixes, ended any faint hopes San Diego had of a comeback.
The Surf Riders’ bowlers had little answer to San Ramon’s aggression. Javed Zadran picked up two wickets, while Kunj Bhagat and Skanda Rohit Sharma claimed one each. However, the lack of early breakthroughs and Johnson’s destructive innings left them on the back foot.
Ultimately, San Ramon Grizzlies cruised to 136 for 4 in 15.2 overs, claiming a dominant six-wicket win. The match underlined their strength as a balanced side with both explosive batting power and disciplined bowling. For San Diego, it was a game of missed opportunities and a reminder that their batting order must step up if they are to challenge stronger opponents in the tournament.
