The Demerara Cricket Club ground, home facility of Test greats Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs and Roy Fredericks, will be the venue where the late Andrew Lyght will honored by the New York based Friends of Former Guyana Cricketers group.

A number of ex Guyana players are members of the Friends of Former Guyana Cricketers group. From left back row: Linden Fraser, Deryck Kallicharran, Milton Pydanna, Collie Solomon and Amarnauth Ramcharitar. Sitting from left: Ray Joseph, Leslaine Lambert and Terry Etwaroo.

The game will feature a Friends of Former Guyana Cricketers lineup to comprise mainly ex Guyana players taking on a lineup of DCC select players. It is set for October 1, following which a monetary donation will be made to Lyght’s family.

Lyght, considered the best DCC player never to graduate from the Guyana national team ranks to Test level, died at 44 years and was a peer in the Guyana team of the FFGC members.

A letter from DCC stated that the club received clearance from the Guyana Cricket Board for the October 1 date.

The contingent of FFGC members will journey to Guyana for a week and is hoping to play at least two other games.  They are working towards having the Guyana National Stadium on October 4 or 5 to stage a match featuring members of the Guyana team which won the 1983 Shell Shield title, symbol of supremacy of West Indies cricket at the time.

New York and other overseas based members of that team will take on those based in Guyana. Also the FFGC wants to play a game in Berbice.

FFGC president Derrick Kallicharran said they are extending an invitation to all interested New York players and cricket supporters to join the contingent to travel to Guyana.  Interest can be communicated   to the group’s email [email protected]

Kallicharran said all are welcome to join in the activities in Guyana. He said ex players from England where the majority of ex Guyana players reside are keen to make the trip.

The FFGC team from New York is likely to comprise Kallicharran, Terry Etwaroo, Milton Pydanna, Ray Joseph, Leslaine Lambert, Amarnauth Ramcharitar, Kamal Singh, among others.

The FFGC group kicked off its fund raising activities last week Sunday with a highly successful Bar-B-Que, held at the Naresa Palace restaurant in Rockaway Boulevard, in Queens.

They will follow up with a raffle to be drawn on August 13. Tickets can be had from Terry Etwaroo on telephone number 718-840-7600, Derrick Kallicharran at 917-573-8078 or Victor Benjamin at 718-753-2463.

Meanwhile the FFGC group will hold an important meeting tomorrow (Saturday June 11) from 6pm at the Exit Realty office at 215-15 Jamaica Avenue, Queens. All cricket fans are invited.
