Gary Nascimento Benefit Match Planned

A group of Eastern American Cricket Association (EACA) stakeholders identified as the “EACA & Friends of Gary Nascimento” is planning a T20 Benefit Match in honor of the long-time Guyanese cricketer, coach, administrator and umpire Gary Nascimento.

The Benefit Committee consists of Deryck Kallicharran, Krish Prasad, Sew “Shiv” Shivnarine, Rudy Persaud Jameel “JZ” Zafar Mohamed, Ralph Tamesh and John Aaron.  According to the Convener Krish Prasad, “In the coming weeks, the committee is likely to add a few more individuals, as Gary Nascimento is well-liked and respected, and has done a lot for cricket in the New York area. This is a deserving tribute to Nasi.”

The match scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Idlewild Cricket Ground in Rosedale, Queens, NY will feature a Gary Nascimento Guyana XI versus a Rest of the Caribbean XI.  Those members of the Benefit Committee responsible for putting together the two teams are keeping a tight lid on the players likely to participate in the match, until they have confirmation of the lead players.  Some of Gary Nascimento’s peers are expected to participate alongside some of the former youth cricketers he coached in Guyana and the USA.

The match scheduled for an 11:30am start is expected to attract many cricket enthusiasts, and the New York cricket leagues will be asked to forego their Saturday schedules, so that their members may attend the match honoring Gary Nascimento.

Committee member JZ said, “The event will be held in a festive atmosphere, with live commentary expected to be provided by the popular commentating duo of Lenny Achibar and Carl Bennett, at the picturesque Idlewild facility.”

Deryck Kallicharran, a long-time friend of Gary Nascimento said that more details will be announced in the weeks ahead, as plans are finalized for the event.
