Kambalapalli’s Match-Winning Brilliance Powers USA Women Past Italy
A composed all-round performance from Sainavi Kambalapalli guided the United States of America Women to a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Italy Women in their ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 encounter at Gahanga International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Having won the toss, Italy opted to bat first but struggled to gain sustained momentum against a disciplined USA bowling attack. Despite a patient knock from Alexia Kontopirakis, who top-scored with 49 off 56 deliveries, the Italian innings never quite accelerated. Kontopirakis struck two boundaries and two sixes, anchoring the innings while wickets fell steadily around her.

Italy’s early setback came when Emilia Bartram departed for 8, triggering a period of stagnation. Ilenia Sims and Methnara Rathnayake were unable to convert their starts, falling for 9 and 2 respectively as the middle order faltered under pressure. The USA bowlers maintained tight lines, ensuring the run rate remained in check throughout the innings.
Kambalapalli made an early impact with the ball, returning impressive figures of 2 for 12 from her four overs, while Taranum Chopra matched her with two wickets of her own. Aditi Chudasama and Ritu Singh chipped in with a wicket apiece as Italy were restricted to 99 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing a modest target of 100, the USA approach was measured rather than aggressive, built on a solid opening partnership. Kambalapalli carried her excellent form into the chase, crafting a composed unbeaten 52 from 51 balls, punctuated by seven well-timed boundaries. She found a reliable partner in Chetna Pagydyala, who contributed a steady 36 off 39 deliveries.
The pair added 89 runs for the opening wicket, effectively taking the game away from Italy. Pagydyala eventually fell to Thilini Fernando, who was the lone wicket-taker for her side with an economical spell of 1 for 7 from four overs. However, by that stage, the result was all but sealed.
Kambalapalli remained unbeaten to see her side home, alongside Isani Vaghela, who added a quick 7 not out as the USA reached 101 for 1 in just 16.1 overs.
Italy’s bowlers struggled to apply consistent pressure outside of Fernando’s spell, with several conceding runs at over ten an over. The inability to defend a below-par total ultimately proved decisive.
Kambalapalli’s outstanding all-round display earned her the Player of the Match award, underlining her growing influence within the USA setup. The victory reinforces the USA Women’s strong campaign in the tournament, while Italy will look to regroup after a performance that lacked the necessary intensity with both bat and ball.
