LI Lions vs NY Knights
LI Lions won the toss and elected to bat first. Getting off to a stable start of 60 runs in the first 10 overs for the loss of no wickets, Lions were building up for a big score. They were ably led by skipper Kunaal Kapoor who scored his 5th 100 (127 – 9 x 6’s & 7 x 4’s) of the season and guided Lions to a defendable 245/9 in 30 overs. Lions had a great finish where Sachin Mohan played a brilliant cameo scoring 26 runs in just 8 balls before getting held at the boundary, including 2×6’s and 3×4’s.
In return NY Knights were always under the gun with a stiff target, and were all out for 120 runs in 22.1 overs. Abhishek Gulati led the attack and picked up 3 wickets. He was supported by Sandeep and Roopinder who picked up 2 wickets each to wrap up Knights and completing another clinical victory for the Lions.

Tri-City Sun Sets on Yakusari Horizon
Kailberg Field, Schenectady, NY– The Tri-City Cricket Club kept rolling along in league play this weekend, earning a hard fought, six wicket victory over the Yakusari Horizon CC in a limited, 30 over Commonwealth League match on Sunday July 22, 2012.

As seems to be the case every week, the comfy confines of Kailberg Field have quickly gained the reputation of being a “batsman’s paradise” as recently described by Commonwealth league official Raouff Singh. With tight side boundaries and a close clipped, flat quick outfield, batsmen are able to display a wide array of the type of shots that set cricket apart from all other bat and ball sports. And the weather cooperated as well, with overcast skies and intermittent sunshine.

Yakusari won the toss and elected to bat first, sending skipper Anthony and Steve to the crease to open. The pair faced the opening salvos of Tri-City’s Theron Blair and John Florent, a one two punch that proved to be remarkably effective early on, limiting the visitors to a less than five runs an over before the first wicket fell. After Steve was dismissed caught off of Florent, Anthony followed him back to the pavilion three overs later, also caught, off of Blair. Both opening bowlers made a strong showing in their opening spells, with Florent finishing 1/40 and Blair giving up a stingy 1/17, including two unsullied maidens.

However, Yakusari were not ready to make the long drive home just yet. In fact, it quickly became apparent that they still had plenty of fight in them as #3 Navin and #4 Raj set to work building a third wicket stand that got the home team’s attention. The two Yakusari swashbucklers proceeded to take matters into their own hands and began a brutal assault on Tri-City’s middle order bowling. Keeping steady pace with each other, both batsmen began notching boundaries and sixes with alarming regularity and ran well between the wickets. Suddenly, Schenectady found themselves in a real dogfight, and Yakusari began to sense victory within their grasp.

Unfortunately for them, Tri-City had other plans. In what can only be described as a Mariano Rivera-like closing performance, veteran founding club member Mike Persaud came on and promptly lowered the boom on Yakusari’s middle order batsmen. With laser-like efficiency, Persaud took a wicket in each of his three overs, clean bowling the dangerous Navin four runs shy of his century and getting Raj caught on 71. He then clean bowled Singh and at the end of their innings, Yakusari wound up on 250/5. Navin finished achingly short at 96, including 5 boundaries and a half dozen sixes. Raj wound up with 6 boundaries and three sixes for his 71 run total. Mike Persaud took an amazing 3/19 in just three overs for the home town side.

250 runs is a decent knock for a 30 over contest at Kailberg, Field and Yakusari must have been feeling pretty confident that they could defend that total. But anyone who had witnessed the last few weeks of cricket here in Schenectady would have known it would not be enough. And more importantly, Tri-City knew it too. After racing out to a 7 over, 67 run partnership the previous week against GS-43, openers Ritchie Persaud and his uncle Mike Persaud were once again called upon to set the tone get after the runs right from the start. Unfortunately this week that strategy was costly, as Ritchie was caught of the bowling of Singh in just the second over. Ajai Ismael was then called upon to step up, and he did so in excellent fashion, partnering with the elder Persaud for 59 runs before the second wicket fell. John Florent then came on and batted solidly at #4, but the ultimately, this game came down to the thoroughly dominating performance of Faizal “G-unit” Hussein.

As he had done in our first league game against Castle Hill, Hussein simply CRUSHED the bowling to all corners of the ground. Sixes and fours sprang from his bat like thunderbolts from the heavens, wreaking devastation and destruction down upon Yakusari CC’s beleaguered pacemen and spinners. When Tri-City finally overtook the visitor’s score in the 26th over, Hussein finished on an unbeaten 111 with 7 boundaries and ELEVEN sixes to his credit. Lost in all the fireworks was yet another sturdy knock by Raymond Cecil, who wound up on 32 not out, with three fours and six of his own. Tri-City emerged with a resounding 6 wicket victory and their third league wins in as many games.

A hearty “thank you” goes out to the boys from Yakusari Horizon who waged a spirited and hard fought battle and was gracious enough to make the trek to Schenectady. And while their bowlers were not too fond of Kailberg Field, their batsmen had a great chance to bat play some classic cricket shots in a bucolic setting here in upstate NY. We wish them luck the rest of the way, and hope to see them again soon.

Next up for Tri-City: A renewed local rivalry with West Hill CC at Lincoln Park in Albany on Saturday July 28th, followed by our fourth league game of the season vs. the Rosedale Royals at Kailberg Field on Sunday July 29th. Hopefully, we’ll be able to notch two more wins this weekend!
