At the Gahanga Cricket Stadium Oval B in Kigali, the United States of America Women produced a composed all-round performance to secure a convincing 53-run victory over Vanuatu Women in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy on Wednesday, April 22nd.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the USA innings never quite found early fluency, slipping to 27 for 2 by the end of the powerplay. The top order struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Vanuatu attack, with Sainavi Kamabalapalli and Isani Vaghela departing cheaply. When Pooja Ganesh fell for just two, the Americans were in early trouble at 28 for 3.

Amid the instability, Chetna Pagydyala emerged as the cornerstone of the innings with a measured yet authoritative knock. Demonstrating composure under pressure, Pagydyala anchored the innings while wickets continued to fall at the other end. By the halfway stage, the USA were 50 for 4, still searching for acceleration.

Pagydyala gradually shifted gears, bringing up her half-century in 48 balls, striking seven boundaries in the process. She found intermittent support from Gargi Bhogle, Ritu Singh, and later Aditi Chudasama, who contributed a useful 13 runs. Despite regular setbacks, Pagydyala’s control allowed the USA to build towards a competitive total.

In the closing overs, she accelerated effectively, finishing unbeaten on a superb 81 off 61 deliveries, decorated with nine fours and two sixes. Her innings propelled the USA to 153 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs, a total that appeared challenging given the conditions. Vanuatu’s bowling was led by Vanessa Vira, who returned impressive figures of 2 for 15, while Natalia Kakor and Nasimana Navaika chipped in with a wicket each.

Chasing 154, Vanuatu’s reply began disastrously, losing Rachel Andrew for a duck in the opening over. Although Valenta Langiatu counterattacked with a brisk 24 off 20 balls, wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing any sustained partnership.

Selina Solman offered resistance with a patient 40 off 40 deliveries, anchoring the innings as Vanuatu attempted to rebuild. However, the mounting required run rate and lack of support from the lower order left her efforts in vain. The USA bowlers maintained tight control, applying pressure through disciplined lines and decent fielding.

Aditi Chudasama was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 for 15 in an excellent spell that dismantled the middle and lower order. She was well supported by Sainavi Kamabalapalli, who delivered a miserly and incisive spell of 3 for 9, including a maiden over. Contributions from Maahi Madhavan and Taranum Chopra ensured there was no respite for the Vanuatu batters.

Ultimately, Vanuatu were bowled out for 100 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target. The comprehensive victory underlined the USA Women’s depth and resilience, with Pagydyala’s match-winning innings earning her the Player of the Match award.
