San Francisco Unicorns Back Cameron White as Head Coach
The San Francisco Unicorns have confirmed Cameron White as their new Head Coach, promoting the former Australia international from his role as Assistant Coach.
White, a former batting all-rounder who represented Australia across all three formats and captained the national side in both T20Is and ODIs, joined the Unicorns’ coaching group during the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. The youngest player ever to captain an Australian state team, White impressed during his time as assistant with his tactical insight and strong emphasis on developing domestic talent within the training environment.

He succeeds fellow Australian Shane Watson, who guided the franchise through its first three MLC seasons. Under Watson’s leadership, the Unicorns established themselves as consistent contenders, reaching the playoffs in successive campaigns.
While continuing his role as Head Coach of Big Bash League side Melbourne Renegades, White will now take on a year-round, hands-on position with the Unicorns as they build towards the 2026 MLC season. He will oversee key performance decisions well in advance of the competition, working within the franchise’s proprietary, data-led performance framework for the league’s fourth edition.
The internal promotion reflects the confidence of co-owners Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan in the foundations already in place at the club. That belief has been reinforced by consecutive playoff appearances, driven by astute domestic and overseas recruitment, as well as the elite off-field standards that White played a central role in developing.
Speaking on his appointment, White said: “Working with the Unicorns last season, I’ve seen first-hand the potential for this franchise to not only grow within MLC, but become a globally recognized brand.
“As Head Coach, this will be an evolution rather than a revolution. The elite performance culture established under Shane’s leadership, combined with Anand and Venky’s ongoing commitment, gives us a strong base. My increased year-round involvement in team development and scouting, supported by a holistic, data-driven approach, should put us in a strong position for sustained success.”
Rajaraman echoed those sentiments, highlighting the franchise’s belief in its long-term strategy. “The past two seasons have delivered consecutive playoff runs, including a finals appearance, and we firmly believe that combining data-driven decision-making with world-class cricketing expertise is the pathway to consistent success.
“Cam’s knowledge, attitude and alignment with the Unicorns’ vision have stood out. This expanded Head Coach role allows him to fully implement his philosophies, and with an established back-office and performance structure already in place, we believe our first championship is getting closer.”
White’s immediate task will be to guide a squad featuring leading T20 internationals such as Matt Short and Finn Allen back to the MLC Final, where the Unicorns last appeared in 2024. His appointment also strengthens the franchise’s ongoing relationship with Cricket Victoria, a partnership that has been instrumental in shaping the club’s domestic and Australian talent pipeline since its inception.
