Charity Game
On August 18, 2012, the Shelter Island Cricket Club will host its inaugural game against St James’s Cricket Club, a team from the United Kingdom, to raise money for the Shelter Island Ambulance Corps.
The teams will play two shortened games; the first game will commence at 11.00 AM and the second game will commence at 2.00 PM. A traditional English fete with children’s games and activities will run throughout, with a junior cricket game and ‘kids Olympics’ taking place from 12.30 to 2.00. ‘First Edition’ Shelter Island Cricket Club merchandise will be on sale throughout the day. There is no admission fee but donations on the day are encouraged. All proceeds will go to the Shelter Island Ambulance Corps. On January 1, 2012 the Shelter Island ambulance corps was transferred from the Red Cross to the Town. At that time it was the only ambulance corps in the country operated under the auspices of the National Red Cross. The cost to run the service is estimated at about $100,000 a year. The corps was founded in 1931 by local residents under a charter issued by Herbert Hoover, then honorary president of the National Red Cross. It is staffed by about 30 unpaid volunteers who service the needs of the 2,400 permanent residents and the nearly 10,000 residents during the summer months.
The match organizer, David Shillingford, who moved to the US in 1998 and resides on Shelter Island explained that “there has been much conversation over the years amongst the ex-pat community about a game of cricket on the island. It took co-organizers Gareth Jones and Gerry Siller to come up with an opposing team and the idea of supporting the ambulance to light the fire. So many others on the island and with connections to the island have given their time and resources to organizing the game so I hope many will come and support the event on the 18th.”
