At the Entebbe Cricket Ground, Uganda Women secured a dramatic one-run victory over USA Women in a gripping encounter at the Women’s Easter T20 Cup on April 9, 2026. In a contest defined by discipline, resilience, and late-game composure, Uganda successfully defended a modest total to claim a memorable win.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Uganda Women faced early pressure with the loss of Stephanie Nampiina in the opening over. Despite the setback, Janet Mbabazi provided early stability with a measured 23 off 27 deliveries, striking three boundaries. Contributions from Immaculate Nakisuuyi (12) and Rita Musamali (15) helped rebuild the innings, but regular wickets prevented any significant acceleration.

The backbone of Uganda’s total came from Esther Iloku, whose composed 40 off 38 balls anchored the innings. Displaying control and shot selection, Iloku ensured her side posted a competitive score despite a lack of substantial partnerships in the latter stages. Uganda concluded their innings at 103 for 5, a total that appeared slightly below par but defendable with disciplined bowling.

USA Women’s bowling unit delivered a structured performance, led by Ritu Priya Singh and Sainavi Kambalapalli, who claimed two wickets apiece while maintaining tight control over the scoring rate. Their efforts ensured Uganda were contained effectively across the middle overs.

In pursuit of 104, USA Women endured a difficult start, losing two wickets within the first two overs. Nikhar Doshi attempted to stabilize the innings with a steady 22, but momentum remained elusive. The middle order struggled under pressure, with crucial run-outs—including those of Isani Mahesh Vaghela and Pooja Ganesh—further disrupting the chase.

Gargi Bhogle’s 23 offered a glimmer of hope, highlighted by a well-struck six, yet consistent breakthroughs from Uganda’s bowlers prevented any sustained recovery. The defining performance came from Sarah Akiteng, whose exceptional spell of 4 for 16 proved decisive. Her ability to strike at critical moments shifted the balance firmly in Uganda’s favor.

Supported effectively by Mutonyi Irene, who claimed two wickets, Uganda maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings. USA Women ultimately finished at 102 for 8, falling agonizingly short by a single run in a match that underscored the fine margins of T20 cricket.

Akiteng’s match-winning contribution earned her the Player of the Match accolade, capping off a performance that exemplified control, precision, and competitive temperament. Uganda Women’s victory not only reflects their tactical discipline but also highlights their growing stature in the women’s T20 arena.
